Sacraments
The seven sacraments presented on the current GTHBA site as visible signs through which the faithful receive the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Sacramental life
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church teaches seven sacraments. The current GTHBA page describes them as “mysteries” because God’s invisible grace is received through sacred rites.
Baptism
Entry into the sacramental life of the Church through water and the Holy Spirit.
Confirmation
The sealing and strengthening of the baptized in the grace of the Holy Spirit.
Holy Communion
Participation in the Eucharist and communion with Christ.
Ordination
The sacrament by which clergy are set apart for ministry; episcopal authority is required for ordination.
Matrimony
The blessing of Christian marriage and the life of husband and wife in the Church.
Penance
Confession, repentance, and reconciliation within the life of faith.
Unction of the Sick
Prayer and anointing for the sick, seeking God’s mercy, healing, and strength.
Saint Tekle Haymanot
Saint Tekle Haymanot (Takla Haymanot, “Plant of Faith”), c. 1215–1313, is remembered as an Ethiopian monk and founder of a major monastic community. He is venerated in the Ethiopian and Coptic Orthodox traditions.
His feast is observed on August 17, and the 24th day of each Ethiopian-calendar month is traditionally dedicated to his remembrance.
